# Image optimization

> Convert and compress eligible images at the edge with WebP, AVIF, quality, and PNG controls.

Image optimization can reduce transferred bytes for supported image requests. It is configured per distribution.

## Controls

| Field | Effect |
| - | - |
| Enabled | Turns image processing on for the distribution |
| WebP | Converts eligible images when the client supports WebP |
| AVIF | Converts eligible images when the client supports AVIF |
| Quality | Sets lossy output quality from 1 to 100 |
| PNG lossless | Compresses eligible PNG content without lossy conversion where applicable |

## Rollout

    Record representative image sizes, visual quality, origin traffic, and cache behavior.

  <Step title="Enable one format">
    Start with WebP or AVIF on a staging distribution. Test browsers, transparent images, animated assets, and metadata expectations.

    Compare output at the intended display sizes. Avoid judging only from thumbnails.

  <Step title="Monitor cache variants">
    Confirm the optimized format varies correctly by client capability and does not overwrite another format's cache entry.
